Abstract. The early period of neolithic cultural diffusion in Sumatera is still in dispute due to its lack of related evidences and archaeological study. The dating from several neolithic sites in Sumatera which are ca. 3000 BP indicates possible existence of western route migration through Malayan Peninsula. This early phase can be traced through the appearance of cord-marked pottery which is commonly found on the western part of archipelagos. Landai Rockshelter in Merangin Regency, Jambi provides us evidences of neolithic occupation with the existence of cord-marked pottery. Artifactual study through identification on the decoration pattern allowed us to use cord-marked pottery as specific marker of the early neolithic phase. This aspect can be done by contextual analysis through observation on the vertical distribution of decorated pottery on its each stratigraphical units, accompanied by its association with the other remains (molluscs, vertebrate remains, and lithic artifacts). It successfully revealed the possibility of two different phases of neolithic occupation based on position and radiocarbon dating. Cord-marked pottery on US c at Landai Rockshelter represents the early phase of neolithic occupation in Sumatera, which also supported the hypothesis of the neolithic cultural expansion from the west, through the Malayan Peninsula then arrived in Sumatera at least ca. 3000 years ago.
